GARBAGE

In Ghent we sort out the waste to do as much recycling as possible.

Below the kitchen sink you can find the bins.
When full you can empty them in the larger bins outside at the back.

There are 5 main waste types.

GARBAGE

Garbage goes in the big black dumpster (outside at the back)

  • Everything non-recyclable and non-compostable items
  • Meat
  • Tissues
  • Plastic bags
  • Combustible non-recyclable household waste

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastic bottles
  • Metal cans and drinking cartons
  • Glass
  • Sharp objects
  • Small hazardous waste
  • Frying oil,…

COMPOST

Compost goes in the big green dumpster (outside at the back)

  • Fruit and vegetable matter (no tissues, no meat)
  • Coffee grounds (no pads)

RECYCLABLE PACKAGING

Recyclable packaging goes in the blue bag (outside at the back in the light grey bin)

  • Plastic bottles and vials:
    Bottles that held lemonade, water, milk, laundry detergent and fabric softener, distilled water, bath and shower products, fruit and vegetable juice, washing-up liquid and liquid cleaners, yoghurt drinks …
  • Metal containers:
    like drink cans, tins, lids and caps of bottles and jars, metal boxes and tin cans, aluminium plates, trays or dishes, cosmetics and food aerosols.
  • Drink cartons:
    For instance: fruit juice, soup, milk …

DO NOT throw these in the blue bag (outside at the back in the light grey bin)

  • Childproof containers
  • Insecticides, herbicides, moss killer, rat poison packaging,…
  • Engine oil, paint, lacquer and varnish packaging
  • Syringes, aluminium foil, polystyrene foam …

GLASS

Glass goes in the white plastic box in the basement.

CARDBOARD AND PAPER

Cardboard and paper goes in the cardboard box in the basement. Only newspapers, magazines and leaflets (remove plastic wraps), paper bags and cardboard boxes, books, writing or printing paper.
